Question about Tea

I was recently asked what was the difference between a tea, tisane, and an infusion.
The differences are based on what they are made from. The three main ingredients are:

  • Leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant (Tea)
  • Leaves of other plants (Herbs)
  • Other plant parts (Spices)

A tea is made from the Camellia sinensis plant. It is listed as a tea if it contains Camellia sinensis plant no matter what other ingredients are included.
An infusion is when you use a spice. There can be an herb added, but not a tea to still be called an infusion.
A tisane is when only an herb is used.
